Zacari David "Zac" Hughes (born June 6, 1971 in Bentley , Perth ) is a former Australian football player.

Career

Hughes was born in Western Australia , but grew up in Rochdale, England , where he also went to school, where he was active for the respective school teams and was appointed to Rochdale's school selection in 1985. In 1987 he was given a two-year training contract ("YTS") by the local fourth division club AFC Rochdale . As early as September 1987, Hughes came to the professional team for the first time due to the loss of the regular central defender John Bramhall , at 16 years and 104 days he became the youngest competitive debutante in Rochdale's club history. The age record was only broken in 2016 by Daniel Adshead , but Hughes is still (as of 2018) the club's youngest league debutant.

His debut on September 19, 1987 against Exeter City (final score 1: 1), followed in the next few months by another league use and two appearances in the Football League Trophy , all as part of the starting XI. In his only use in the following season 1988/89, in September in the League Cup against Burnley , Hughes was seriously injured and had to undergo three operations. In August 1989 he signed his first professional contract, but his injury problems remained and in the season 1989/90 he was only able to play one game before he was out again for a long time. In April 1991 he made another comeback in the reserve team, but persistent injury problems finally forced him to end his professional career in 1992.
