Tsaghkadzor ( Armenian Ծաղկաձոր ; also Tsaghkadzor of Russian Цахкадзор ) is a city in Armenia , about 50 kilometers north of Yerevan in the province of Kotayk . In 2009 the city had 1608 inhabitants.
Location
Zaghkadzor is located about 1,800 meters above sea level at the foot of the 2,821-meter-high Teghenis Mountain and is the Armenian ski center (season from mid-September to mid-April).
history
In the early Middle Ages, the city was the headquarters of the family Waradschnuni , the forest masters of Arsakiden . Her descendants include the Byzantine general Philaretos Brachamios . From the 17th century to 1947 the place was called Darachichag .
In Soviet times, Tsaghkadzor was transformed into a modern city; In 1984 it received city rights. It was expanded to become a holiday resort and tourist destination. In April 2015, the men 's team chess championship was held in Zaghkadzor .
Attractions
An important sight is the Kecharis monastery with a domed church from the beginning of the 11th century, which is dedicated to the Armenian national saint Gregory the Illuminator .
