Zaid Nasser is an American jazz - saxophonist .

Zaid Nasser is the son of bassist Jamil Nasser (1932–2010) and grew up on the New York jazz scene; as a young saxophonist he played with Papa Jo Jones , Lou Donaldson and George Coleman . As an adult he then worked a. a. with Cecil Payne , Junior Cook , Jon Hendricks and Harold Mabern . He played for three years in the band of Calvin Newborn in Memphis (Tennessee) , then with Bill Doggett and with Panama Francis ' Savoy Sultans . Since the 1990s he has performed regularly with his own quartet in the New York jazz club Smalls ; He is also a member of the Across 7 Street Septet and played in the Frank Hewitt Quintet. Smalls Records also produced his debut album Escape from New York in 2007 with standards such as Sophisticated Lady and his own compositions, followed by Off Minor (2009). In 1998 he contributed two titles to the compilation Jazz Underground: Live At Smalls , published by Impulse! Records ; he can also be heard on Ned Otter's album The Secrets Inside (2002). Currently (2019) he is a member of the Chris Byars Sextet.
