Zanata stone

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The so-called Zanata stone is a basalt stone with the dimensions 26.1 cm × 5.5 cm × 5.4 cm. Three characters are carved into it, which experts interpret as the letters "ZNT" in Tifinagh script . The age of the stone or the inscription is based on the period between the 8th century BC. Estimated BC and 15th century AD.

The stone was found in 1992 in the municipality of El Tanque in the northwest of the island of Tenerife . The then head of the Archaeological Museum Tenerife (today Museo de la Naturaleza y el Hombre ) Rafael González Antón considered the stone to be the final proof of his theory that the Guanches were brought to Tenerife by Phoenician-Punic ships. He presented this theory in a large PR campaign by the museum and also published a monograph on the Zanata stone. Some experts do not necessarily consider the theory to be false, but do not see conclusive evidence in a single stone with three letters, others even consider the stone to be a forgery. The Zanata stone is exhibited in the Museo de la Naturaleza y el Hombre in Santa Cruz, Tenerife.
