Course of the Zanskar in the catchment area of the Indus |
The river Zanskar (also Tsarap ) arises at the confluence of the rivers Stod and Lungnak .
The source river Stod has its origin at Pensi La , while the Lungnak is created by the union of the rivers Kargyag and Tsarap in the Padum valley. The Zanskar covers about 150 km before flowing north through the impressive Zanskar Gorge and then pouring into the Indus .
Another tributary in the lower reaches of the Zanskar is the Markha .
Rafting
The Zanskar is mainly known for its good suitability for rafting during the summer months. Several commercial providers organize tours. Since its rapids reach a higher level of difficulty, it is only recommended for advanced riders.
Winter trekking
In winter the Zanskar is used for winter trekking. The tour is called the Frozen River Trek .
