Inscription on the Zant cross .

According to the text, a certain Heinrich Zant was killed on St. Vitus's Day in 1313 (= June 15).

History and background

The cross is probably a so-called atonement cross , which was erected on the basis of agreements from an atonement treaty . A function as a memorial cross that was erected by the bereaved is also conceivable . The inscription, which can hardly be read today, but is known from older copies, does not fully reflect the name of the victim. It was actually about Heinrich Zant on the Danube. He belonged to a sideline of the Zant family, which was one of the most influential families in Regensburg from the end of the 13th century to the middle of the 14th century. Family members held several public offices, including the important mayor's office between 1287 and 1359 . The background to the crime is unclear. A possible motive could be found in a dispute between the Zant and Werner Straubinger. Werner Straubinger was married to Offmey Zant, the sister of Heinrich and Albrecht Zant, two distant relatives of the murder victim. However, since Werner Straubinger had been banned from the city for a criminal offense, the brothers may no longer consider the marriage relationship to be opportune and tried to break the marriage. In the course of this conflict Heinrich Zant could have been killed on the Danube.

The Zant Cross is included in the list of monuments of the Free State of Bavaria: D-3-62-000-526 .
