A tenth of a dimension (also spring gauge , drive dimension , tenon compass , spindle dimension ) is a measuring device for length or thickness measurement.

description

The scale with the measured values is ten times as far from the axis of rotation of the device as the measuring sensor. With this translation, one millimeter of the measuring object corresponds to one centimeter on the reading scale. Differences of a tenth of a millimeter can be measured exactly and smaller differences can still be estimated.

The common area of application is precision mechanics to determine the smallest components and wire diameters. In contrast to the vernier caliper or the micrometer screw, it is very easy to use because it enables one-handed operation and is used for quick and precise measurements.

The measuring device is particularly common in the trades watchmaker , jeweler , goldsmith and silversmith in order to determine the dimensions of small parts quickly and reliably. In a special way, this affects the gear axes and the thickness of watch springs , wires , pearls or precious stones .

Today the measuring devices are used by traditional workshops, increasingly in a modern version. This modern modified form based on the same measuring principle is the Leveridge Gauge . The size or length of an object is determined between two probe tips and the value is displayed by a pointer on a round scale or digitally .

The scale of the original tenths of a measure allows you to read millimeters and tenths, which is what gave it its name. The term spread with the measuring tool and was translated directly into some foreign languages. In some regions it was customary to use a second scale to indicate the measured value in lines . One line is one twelfth of an inch (1/12 ″). Swiss and French watchmakers use this instrument in their practice.
