Zashchitnyye Islands

The Zashchitnyye Islands ( English ; Russian Острова Защитные Ostrowa Saschtschitnyje , German “Security Islands” ) are a group of islands off the Ingrid Christensen coast of the East Antarctic Princess Elisabeth Land . They are located on the north side of the Langnes Peninsula in the Vestfold Mountains .

Aerial photographs were taken during the Norwegian Lars Christensen Expedition in 1936/37 , during the US Operation Highjump (1946–1947), during a Soviet Antarctic expedition in 1956 and during the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions in 1957 and 1958. Russian Scientists mapped and named them. The Antarctic Names Committee of Australia transferred the Russian name in 1973 in a partial translation into English.
