Zavadovskiy Island ( Russian Остров Завадовского Ostrow Sawadowskowo ) is an ice-covered and uninhabited island in the western ice shelf off the Leopold and Astrid coast of the East Antarctic Princess Elisabeth Land . It is located 19 km east of Mikhaylov Island .
The island was discovered in 1956 during a Soviet Antarctic expedition . It is named after Iwan Iwanowitsch Sawadowski (1780–1837), deputy commander on board the Vostok for the first Russian Antarctic expedition (1819–1821) under the direction of Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen . The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names translated the Russian designation into English in 1965.
