Zbysław-Zając cycling track

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Zbysław Zając cycle track ( Tor Kolarski im. Zbysława Zająca ) is a cycle track in Szczecin, Poland .

The Stettin-Westend municipal cycling track was built in 1925 in the Eckerberg Forest in Stettin-Westend ( Łękno since 1945 ) with the financial support of the Stoewer brothers , who ran a company in Stettin for the production of cars and bicycles. It was open, 400 meters long and held 2000 spectators. In the following years, the track surface was renewed several times.

In 1925 and 1926, German track championship championships were held at the cycling races , and motorcycle races were also held in the 1920s and 1930s.

The track was hardly damaged in the Second World War , and cycling races were held again as early as 1946 after two concrete slabs had been replaced. In the 1950s, the entire surface was renewed again. From 1980 the track was used for the Olympic preparation of Polish cyclists. In 1987 the cycling track was extensively renovated by Ulrich Müther , a civil engineer from Binz . It was given a roof and was the only covered track in Poland, even if only half-covered, until the opening of the BGŻ BNP Paribas Arena in Pruszków in 2008. When it reopened in 1988, the track was named after Zbysław Zając from Szczecin , who competed in the track sprint for Poland at the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964 and was considered the most successful track sprinter in Polish sports history at the time.

After a further modernization, European championships were held on the track in 1998, and in 2001 the Track Cycling World Cup in 2001 .

Today the cycling track is part of a sports complex with other facilities, including a sports hall for martial arts, an ice rink and fields for beach volleyball and soccer .
