Zderaz is a historic district in the south of today's New Town of the Czech capital Prague .

geography

The district was located on the bank rock (Břežská skála) , which extended to the Vltava river , but was demolished around 1900 during the Prague urban redevelopment together with surrounding buildings.

history

The historical core of the place was the parish church of St. Wenceslas , which was laid out in the 12th century by the Hrabischitz family . When the New Town of Prague was founded, the town was united with it. To the north-west of the church, Na Zderaze Street , located between Myslíkova and Resslova streets, reminds of the earlier settlement .

Castle

To the west of St. Wenceslas Church, King Wenceslas IV had a small Gothic castle built on a mountain ledge above the banks of the Vltava from 1380 . This was probably two-story with vaulted rooms, had a five-story tower and was surrounded by at least two crenellated walls. After several reconstructions, the castle was demolished at the end of the 19th century, the Břežská rock was partially removed and the Resslova street was built as an extension of the Ječná to the bank of the Vltava river with an even gradient.

monastery

The place name became known after the order of the Canons of the Holy Sepulcher settled here from the 13th century and took over the church, which are also known as the Knights of the Cross with the double red cross or “Zderazer Kreuzherren”. In other places, the Knights of the Cross with the Red Star are referred to as resident at the Zderaz.

From the 14th century, there was an Augustinian monastery on the Zderaz, to which the noble Schwabenitz family was close. In the 19th century this building was used as a state prison.

building

Another important building in Zderaz is the Baroque Church of St. Cyril and Methodius on Resslova Street and the main building of the Czech Technical University in Prague .

In the nearby St. Adalbert Church there are furnishings from the second Zderaz parish church (probably the Church of St. Peter and Paul the Canons of God, which was demolished in 1905 ) as well as the relic of St. Maria from Zderaz.
