Zdzisław Marchwicki (born October 18, 1927 in Dąbrowa Górnicza , † April 29, 1977 in Katowice ), called "The Vampire of Zagłębie " ( wampir z Zagłębia ), was a Polish serial killer .

Career

He was born into a poor family in 1927. His father was married five times and had four children - three boys and a girl - some of whom were later linked to the murders.

Marchwicki committed all of his murders in the vicinity of Czeladź , Będzin and Dombrowaer brazier near Katowice. The series of murders with fourteen victims began in 1964 and did not end until 1970. The murder victims were between 16 and 57 years old. They were knocked down from behind with a blunt object and then killed by further blows, and some of the genitals were mutilated. Most of the crimes were committed over a period of roughly two years from late 1964 to late 1966. At first the rumor arose that the perpetrator wanted to murder a thousand women for the millennium celebrating the Christianization of the country in 1966.

During the investigation, the record sum of one million zlotys was offered as a reward.

One of the victims was Jolanta Gierek, niece of the Communist Party leader in the area, Edward Gierek . However, the police and the public prosecutor denied that political pressure was exerted on them as a result.

After his arrest in 1972 Marchwicki was charged with the murder of fourteen women and the attempted murder of seven women.

The trial against him drew great public interest and lasted 10 months. Marchwicki was sentenced to death in July 1975, although an attempted murder could not be proven. He was hanged in Katowice in 1977.

The brother Jan Marchwiki was also sentenced to death. Another brother, Henryk, was sentenced to 25 years in prison for an accessory to murder. Her half-sister Halina was sentenced to three years in prison for receiving stolen goods for deliberately receiving items such as wristwatches and fountain pens from Zdzisław's victims. Halina's son was also sentenced to four years in prison.
