The Freudenberg colliery is a former hard coal mine in Essen-Bredeney . Despite the more than 170 years of mining history, little is reported about the mine.

Mining history

On January 5, 1705, the concession for a three- seam mine field was granted. The field was located opposite the Essen-Werden district. From 1734 to 1736 the mine was in operation , presumably in the substation construction . During this period, the dewatering was carried out using hand pumps . In the years 1819 to 1825 the mine was closed. In November 1826 began, a seigeren shaft to sink . After that, the mine was no longer mentioned in the documents for several years. There is evidence that the mine was in operation in 1848. However, there were only thin and irregular seams. In the fourth quarter of 1855 mining was carried out. There is evidence that the mine was in operation in 1857. The Freudenberg colliery was shut down around 1880.
