The time pyramid is a form of art under construction in Wemding in public space . The project started in 1993 on the 1200th anniversary of the founding of Wemding, is estimated to be another 1200 years and is therefore expected to be finished in 3193.

prehistory

The place Wemding goes back to the year 793 and celebrated its 1200th anniversary in 1993. The time pyramid was devised to commemorate this period of 1200 years.

concept

Axonometric projection of the design of the time pyramid in Wemding .

The pyramid, when completed in 3183, will consist of 120 blocks of cement, each 1.2 m long, 1.2 m wide and 1.8 m high. Adjacent blocks are separated by a distance of 0.6 m (half of a block). The plan is to place a block every ten years for a total of 1190 years.

The first level - 13.8 m by 13.8 m - will consist of 64 blocks arranged in an 8 × 8 square. The second level will contain 6 × 6, i.e. 36, blocks. The third level provides 4 × 4, i.e. 16, blocks, before finally the last level is completed with 2 × 2, i.e. 4, blocks. A model of the finished work of art is exhibited in the Haus des Gastes in Wemding.

The part of the pyramid that has been built so far is located on a concrete field on a rounded hill, the Robertshöhe , on the northern edge of Wemding. So far (2013) only three blocks have been laid: the first in October 1993, the second in 2003, the third in 2013. The fourth will be added in 2023 as planned.

The project is mainly financed by the fact that local companies, for example, provide the materials for the concrete slab free of charge. In addition, the material for the individual blocks is not specified; future generations may vary depending on availability. The project is managed by a foundation based in Wemding.

Time schedule

The meaning of the numbers 12, 1200 years and 120 stones is a coincidence; the 1993 design start date was the most practical. Similar constellations would otherwise only have been possible in 1633 (7 × 7, 840 years, 84 blocks) and 2443 (9 × 9, 1650 years, 165 blocks).

Artist

The project was conceived by the artist Manfred Laber. The project officially started in June 1993. The whole point of the concept is to give a sense of what a period of 1200 years really means.

Manfred Laber was born in 1932 in Wemding and studied in the 1950 painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin . Other works of art by him are exhibited on Isla San Antonio, in Alcanar ( Spain ) and in Mormoiron ( France ). Alcanar was also his part-time residence.
