The journal for German philology ( ZfdPh for short ) is a specialist journal for German studies . The magazine appears annually in four issues and a special issue with changing thematic orientation. According to the publisher, the print run is 650 copies, the circulation in Germany 350 copies; the magazine can, however, also be subscribed to in a digital version.

The magazine was founded in 1868 by Ernst Höpfner and Julius Zacher and has been published by Erich Schmidt Verlag since 1954 . The first and third issue of each year is devoted to older German literature and the history of language, while issues two and four are devoted to modern German literature. A separate editorial team is responsible for each of the two areas.
