Jean-Marie Zemb

Jean-Marie Zemb (born July 14, 1928 in Erstein ; † February 15, 2007 in Lorient ) was a French philosopher and Germanist . His specialty was German linguistics . His best-known work is his comparative grammar French-German.

Life

Zemb grew up in Strasbourg, which was temporarily occupied by the Germans . As an Alsatian Malgré-nous , he was an anti-aircraft helper in the Wehrmacht when he was 16 . He studied in France and Germany philosophy , the license acquired in scholastic philosophy at Dominican University Saulchoir and received his doctorate in 1955 in Freiburg on nature ethics and situational ethics in the light of a metaphysics of human freedom . From 1956 to 1961 he was a lecturer at the University of Hamburg. In 1960 he passed the Agrégation in France and taught from 1961 to 1966 as Agrégé d'Allemand at various high schools in Paris. In addition, he worked for two years with aphasics in the Pitié-Salpêtrière. From 1966 to 1968 he taught applied linguistics at the University of Besançon. He qualified as a professor in Paris in 1968 with the thesis Les structures logiques de la proposition allemande , which was supervised by Jean Fourquet and philosophically by René Poirier (1900–1995) . Contribution à l'étude des rapports entre le langage et la pensée (Paris 1968). From 1968 to 1986 he successively filled chairs for German linguistics at the universities of Paris VIII, Paris III and Paris X. In 1986 the Collège de France set up a chair for him, "Grammaire et pensée allemandes". He was a member of the “Commission générale de terminologie et de neologie”. In 1999 the Académie des sciences morales et politiques elected him as a member.

In the German public he was responsible for the didactics of the television series Les Gammas! Les Gammas! . He dealt extensively and critically with the German spelling reform of 1996 , about which he wrote numerous articles for German newspapers.
