Magazine rating

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term journal ranking (Engl. Journal ranking ) referred to in the scientific practice, the grouping of scientific journals according to their methodological quality.

Use

Magazine reviews provide information about the “craftsmanship” quality of articles in a specialist magazine, but not about their “visionary” quality or quality in the sense of “practicality”. For this purpose rather is the citation, for example through impact factor or Eigenfactor . Journal evaluations should therefore only be seen as one part of the evaluation of scientific quality, but certainly as a very important part.

Examples

Business administration

In business administration in German-speaking countries, the magazine rating VHB-Jourqual by the Association of University Teachers for Business Administration has found widespread use. In the meantime, there is a new edition of this assessment with the VHB-Jourqual3 (2015). The scientific quality of a journal is determined by the scientific level of its articles and the scientific requirements of the publisher. The full and associate members of the VHB and the habilitation candidates and junior professors registered with the VHB are surveyed . The scientific quality is weighted with the expert status of the respondents, which is determined from the number of journals in which the respondent has published, the number of publications in top journals and his experience with international journals.

Another example is the ERIM Journals List of the Dutch Erasmus Research Institute of Management , which evaluates international specialist journals in the field of management. However, this does not include any German-language specialist journals. In addition, the so-called "FT50 list" of the Financial Times , which lists the 50 most renowned specialist magazines in the field of management, plays a major role, especially in the international area .

Economics

In economics , the evaluations of journals, faculties and researchers are mainly based on RePEc , because this is by far the most extensive and cross-language database. The ratings are updated monthly. In addition, the Combes and Linnemer rankings are also frequently used.

In contrast, the IfW journal ranking and the Tinbergen list show only small excerpts from the research that are consolidated in the Handelsblatt economists ranking ; German-language magazines are excluded.
