history

After cement was rediscovered in England in the 1840s, a cement industry developed very quickly in Europe in the second half of the 19th century. In 1842 the first cement works on Austrian soil was opened in Kufstein .

In 1848, large deposits of marl , the basis for the production of cement, were discovered near Schloss Gartenau near Grödig . That was the beginning of the still existing cement works in Gartenau - today known under the name "Leube". Georg Volderauer started mining marl in Gamp near Hallein in 1859. This stone-walled shaft furnace was built in 1890 by Max Thury, General Director of Perlmoser Aktiengesellschaft, as a production branch. The raw material comes from the Schrambach layers above the plant. Operations ceased in 1926. In 2003, this early industrial monument was comprehensively secured and restored in the state of Salzburg and thus secured from further deterioration.
