from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Central depot is a term used by museums, libraries and archives for the spatial concentration of art and cultural goods such as books, films, archive materials, museum goods; see also depot (museum) . Most restoration workshops and employees' offices are also combined with the central depots. Central depots are planned by the Weimar Classic Foundation and the British Museum as well as the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation ; in 2012 that of the Freiburg City Museum was completed.

Examples

  • Central depot of the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) near Washington, DC , built as a research center far outside the US capital. The actual showrooms of the NMAI are located in Washington on the National Mall .
  • Library and Archives Canada Preservation Center in Gatineau / Québec . Opened in 1997 in the neighboring city of Ottawa, the Canadian capital, as the magazine location of the National Archive of Canada , the facility now serves as a common central repository for the collections of the former National Library and the former National Archives of Canada as well as the Portrait Gallery of Canada .
  • Storage magazine of the Berlin State Library - Prussian Cultural Heritage. It has been under construction in the Berlin suburb of Friedrichshagen since 2007 and is intended to provide planning security for at least 100 years for housing the collections of the Berlin State Library, which are growing by 120,000 units annually. A large warehouse is being built, which will be operated largely automatically and will only cause low personnel costs, which can be expanded in the long term and which will store books and other media in a manner that is as safe as possible in terms of climate, light and fire. The central depot is planned by the Munich architecture firm Eberhard Wimmer, which won the competition in 2005. The facade with its vertical green stone slices is reminiscent of Arne Jacobsen's State Bank in Copenhagen, the building is otherwise characterized by the cool modernity of the post-war years.
  • In 2003 the Center for Bevaring af Kulturarv was opened in Vejle , Denmark .
  • Central art depot of the Freiburg im Breisgau municipal museums . The zero-emission building was put into operation in May 2012.
