The central cemetery Wernigerode is a listed cemetery in Wernigerode in Saxony-Anhalt .

It covers an area of 16 hectares and about 8,000 graves. In addition to optional graves, there is also the option of anonymous urn burial in a community urn facility. The cemetery complex is located at Am Eichberg 7 in the Hasserode district of Wernigerode .

Design and history

The cemetery was laid out in 1885 as the An der Molle cemetery. The cemetery complex was later expanded in a south-westerly direction towards the Eichberg .

The oldest part of the cemetery is divided by a main avenue and cross paths. In addition to many historical and artistically elaborate graves, there are also larger row graves for fallen and victims of the First and Second World Wars . For example, 50 people who died between 1914 and 1918 were buried in the "Ehrenfriedhof in front of the Weeping Woman", most of whom probably came from the city's hospitals. 250 people who died between 1941 and 1948 were buried in the "Ehrenfriedhof Mauerseite". Among them are the victims of a bomb attack on Wernigerode on February 22nd, 1944. In addition, there are 60 victims (exclusively men) from the years 1941 to 1948 in the "Ehrenfriedhof" soldiers' oaks. On the steles of the cemetery of honor only the names of the deceased are given, without dates of birth and death.

Parts of the cemetery consist of slopes steeply sloping towards the Himmelpforte and the Hasseröder valley. The graves located there are arranged in terraces. In the center there is a mourning hall and the cemetery administration. The buildings are simple, designed in a modern design language. In November 2004, the sculpture transition , donated by Karl-Heinz Ziomek, was installed in the mourning hall.

In local monument list the cemetery is since February 13, 2015 under the registration number 094 50 657 as a monument listed.

District administrator Erich von Stosch (1877–1946) and agricultural technician Hans Holldack (1879–1950) were buried in the central cemetery.
