The Central Stadium ( Georgian ცენტრალური სტადიონი ), actually Lavrenti-Beria -Dinamo-Stadion ( Georgian ლავრენტი ბერიას სახელობის დინამოს სტადიონი ), was a football stadium in Tbilisi . It was the first large stadium in Georgia and stood on the site of today's Boris Paichadze Stadium . The Tbilisi Central Stadium was the home ground of the Dinamo Tbilisi club . It was both designed and built by the architect Artschil Kurdiani from 1932 to 1935 and is considered to be one of the best examples of Georgian architecture of the era.
The original central stadium had space for 23,000 spectators. To increase this number, Artschil Kurdiani added metal structures again in 1956. The expanded stadium held 35,000 seats for spectators.
In the 1960s and 1970s, Artschil Kurdiani, Gia Kurdiani and the constructor Shalva Gasashvili planned a new stadium. This project was realized by the architect Gia Kurdiani. The older, architecturally rich building was demolished and a new stadium built, now known as the Boris Paitschadze Stadium . It opened on September 29, 1976 as the Vladimir Ilyich Lenin Stadium with a UEFA Cup game against Cardiff City .
