The Center for Popular Culture and Music (ZPKM) is a central scientific institution of the University of Freiburg founded in 2014 and serves to research popular music cultures in their various historical and current forms. It emerged from the German Folk Song Archive founded by John Meier in 1914 .

tasks

The center serves cross-faculty and interdisciplinary research, teaching, further education and international cooperation and deals with the research area “Popular Culture and Music”. The center performs the following tasks:

  • historical exploration of popular musical cultures from the early modern period to the present
  • Analysis of the subject area of ​​music, politics and society
  • theoretical reflection on popular culture and music
  • Research based on various cultural, media and musicological approaches
  • Discourse history of popular music and the term "folk song"
  • Reflection on research strategies and methods
  • Collecting and documenting the sources and objects of popular musical culture

Collections, Documentation and Library

The ZPKM has an extensive specialist library and various collections on popular music culture: the German Folk Song Archive founded in 1914 , the German Musical Archive and the international pop music archive. The holdings include different media forms (individual song and reception receipts, music books, song books, song books, sound carriers, graphic certificates, etc.). The ZPKM collections are under monument protection; they belong to the most important German university collections.

The song documentation includes workbooks for more than 20,000 songs. The documentation folders contain the following important information about the individual songs: information on the origin of the song (authors), first publication, distribution, etc., records from ethnographic collection activities and handwritten tradition, evidence of the respective reception context as well as song quotations from different sources, as well as references to printed sources and Specialist literature.

In addition to the aforementioned collections and song documentation, the Center for Popular Culture and Music also has a comprehensive specialist library on popular songs and popular music (specialist literature, magazines). In 2011 the library was named an “outstanding research library” by the German Research Foundation.

Part of the ZPKM's holdings have been digitized, such as the ZPKM's song pamphlets, cf. for this the project VD Lied . Research and Academic Teaching

As the central scientific institution of the Freiburg University, the center works together with the Faculty of Philosophy and Philology. In the field of academic teaching, the center is primarily involved in the media cultural studies and cultural anthropology / European ethnology courses.

The center issues various publications, in printed form the yearbook Lied und popular Kultur / Song and Popular Culture and the series of publications on Popular Culture and Music . (together with the University of Salzburg). The publications are published by Verlag Waxmann (Münster).
