Zephir is an Italian manufacturer of road- rail vehicles based in Modena .
history
The company was founded in 1969 and supplies shunting tractors for industry and ports. As an alternative to the conventional rail-bound shunting locomotives, locomotives were developed that can travel both on the road and on tracks; they are also known as locomotive tractors . In the French-speaking area, however, the translation generally refers to a shunting locomotive. In 1977 the first two-way shunting vehicle was brought onto the market, which was still in active use in April 2015. In the following 40 years more than 2500 vehicles were delivered and Zephir advanced to become the leading European manufacturer in this segment.
Series
The range of available locomotives essentially comprises vehicles with rail guidance systems, the rubber tires are used for traction on the road and on the tracks. When driving on rails, guide rollers are also lowered to keep track of things. The smaller types get by with two additional axles, the larger loco tractors have four additional axles for tracking. All types of international coupling systems (e.g. Scharfenberg, Dellner) can be installed. The loco tractors can be supplied with gauges from 750 mm to 1676 mm, and it is even possible to equip a vehicle with two different tracking rollers for two different gauges. Equipping as an explosion-proof or remote-controlled locomotive is also possible. The shunting vehicles are driven by diesel engines with hydraulic power transmission or by electric motors fed by accumulators. 90% of the machines ever produced are still in use worldwide.
Historic series
The early types resemble a jeep on wheels and some - as mentioned above - are still in use today. A type designation has not been passed down. The traction power corresponds to a small locomotive.
Current series
Today, a good dozen different types are offered in the LOK and LOK E product groups, all with the same design. The power spectrum ranges from around 100 kW to 362 kW and thus achieves the comparable output of a medium-sized shunting locomotive. Due to the traction, this upper performance class corresponds to a locomotive weighing 100 tons, but a Zephyr weighs only half. The type designation is roughly composed of the pulling force in kN / 10 and the power in PS, separated by a point. The LOKOM product group also sells track-bound shunting locomotives and the CRAB and KUBO product groups sell smaller shunting devices, primarily for easier shunting in workshops.
