Zere Yacobe Amha Selassie ( Amharic ዘርአ ያዕቆብ አምሃ ሥላሴ , * August 17, 1953 ) is the grandson of the emperor Haile Selassie and son of the emperor in exile Amha Selassie I of Ethiopia and a member of the Solomon dynasty .

After the 1974 Revolution, he lived in exile in Great Britain , where he attended school, and later, for a short time, in the United States . He currently lives in Addis Ababa . Today he is the head of the former Ethiopian imperial family. However, descendants of the imperial branch of Lidj Iyasu also lay claim to the throne. The re-establishment of the empire in Ethiopia is not an issue of the regime that has ruled since 1991.

Life

He attended Eton College and Cambridge University , where he also graduated. His grandfather made him crown prince and designated heir to the imperial throne in 1974 after his father's severe stroke. When the father assumed the title of Emperor Amha Selassie in exile in April 1989 , he named Zere Yacobe as heir to the throne.

After the fall of the Ethiopian monarchy, Zere Yacobe finished his studies in Cambridge in the mid-1970s and worked for a short time as a banker in the United States. To be close to his parents, he returned to London. He married and has a daughter, Lideta Zera Yacob , but later separated from his wife. When his father Amha Selassie moved to Virginia in 1989 , he accompanied him for a short time, but later returned to England, where he lived in Manchester for some time . In the meantime he has settled permanently in Ethiopia.

Zere Yacobe has been considered the head of the family since his father's death in February 1997.
