A strain , also called distension , is an injury to parts of the musculoskeletal system such as muscles, tendons, ligaments as a result of a non- physiological stretching, trauma , sudden overload or jerky contraction .

If there is a partial interruption, one speaks of a torn ligament , torn muscle fiber or torn tendon .
