Zeth Höglund grew up in a middle-class family in Gothenburg. His father, Carl Höglund, worked as a merchant and later as a shoemaker. Zeth was the youngest of ten children and the only son. His parents were very religious, but they didn't like the Church's control over people. Höglund later became an atheist .

Höglund spent a few months in 1903 with Fredrik Ström in Paris , where the two Swedes attended socialist events. In 1904 he became a member of the Sveriges socialdemokratiska arbetareparti ("Swedish Social Democratic Workers' Party"), in 1905 he actively supported the Norwegian efforts for independence. A little later he met Karl Liebknecht , who mentioned him in one of his books, Militarism and Anti-Militarism .

After his release he was one of the founders of the Vänsterpartiet ("Left Party"), in December 1917 he visited the leading officials of the Bolsheviks in St. Petersburg . In 1922 he became a member of the leadership of the Comintern . In 1924 he criticized the Comintern's excessive dependence on Moscow. He resigned from the Swedish Communist Party and founded his own Communist Party. In 1926 he returned to the Swedish Social Democratic Labor Party, where he was on the radical left. Until his death he saw himself as a communist and as a supporter of Lenin's original ideas.
