SiN Episodes is the title of a series of first-person shooters in episode format for the PC , which are based on the 1998 computer game SiN . SiN Episodes was developed by Ritual Entertainment and has Valve's Source Engine as the technical basis. The first episode, Emergence, was the first game by a major studio to be produced in episode format and for Valves Steam , with delivery via the Internet alone.

Nine episodes were originally planned. With the sale of Ritual to MumboJumbo and the departure of some leading developers, the development of further parts seems questionable. One reason for this is that MumboJumbo Ritual has already commissioned the creation of “high-quality casual content” (“high quality content for casual gamers”).

overview

The original idea ritual it was, the episodes at an interval of six months at a cost of 19.95 each US dollar to publish. The playing time of each episode was designed for about six hours. Although several multiplayer modes were planned (including co-op mode and other team-based modes), SiN Episodes was only released as a single player game.

The designers attached great importance to the interactivity of the environment, a plot supported by the characters, a striking AI and a story that is influenced by the decisions of the players. The game should record statistics about the actions of the player. It is unclear whether these qualities will continue in the series, as the development of further episodes has been interrupted.

technology

SiN Episodes was realized with the help of the Source Engine and some modifications by ritual.

  • Action influenced by the community
A statistic of how the majority of players make decisions at certain points in the game is intended to influence the history of future episodes. Ritual wants to expand features that are well received by players. However, there were concerns about implementing this system, as players could be frustrated that “their” decision was not taken into account in the game.
  • Multiple materials per surface
The Source Engine originally only supported one material per surface. This meant that objects in the game could only have one material property. Contains z. For example, if a vehicle had a pane of glass, it behaved exactly like the metal body. Ritual added an extension that allows designers to cover a model with multiple materials.
  • Dynamic difficulty level
Similar to other first-person shooters (such as FEAR ), the strength of the opponent adapts to the skill of the player. The game regulates the number of opponents and their accuracy so that the player can progress so quickly in the plot that the game lasts for him about six hours.

Episodes

Emergence

Release date in the US was May 10, 2006. Emergence is the first episode of the series and introduces the various characters. The reviews and reactions were different ( GameSpot, for example, awarded 7.3 out of 10 points). X-Play, on the other hand, called Emergence a simple half-life 2 clone.

The story tells the story of the police officer John R. Blade in the dystopian city of Freeport City. At the beginning, Blade (the player) is freed from the clutches of the wickedly beautiful scientist Elexis Sinclair and the drug lord Viktor Radek by his comrades Jessica and JC. They carried out experiments of unknown proportions on Blade, and Blade is now looking for answers. How Blade got into this situation is unknown. While meeting an informant, the team is ambushed and Blade takes a detour to Radek's headquarters, an oil tanker converted into a laboratory. There he discovers that Sinclair and Radek have developed a drug called "U4". With this Sinclair wants to accelerate human evolution. The result of this acceleration, however, are disfigured and highly aggressive mutants that attack the player as well as the armies of Sinclair's mercenaries and subordinates.

When Radek can't give him any answers and the ship threatens to sink, Blade escapes with Jessica's help in Sintek's "Supremacy Tower". In the final showdown, Blade succeeds in crashing Radek's glider. Before that, however, Jessica von Radek was infected with the mutagen. The episode ends with the news that Freeport City has been attacked by mutants and a state of emergency has been declared.

Curious : a model of the dopefish can be found in a secret hiding place in the belly of the supertanker . The game acknowledges the find with the message "The dopefish lives!"

criticism

Emergence received mostly poor reviews. The PC Games rated the shooter with 68 percent, the GameStar with only 63 percent. The website 4players.de awarded 70 points and PC Powerplay a positive rating of 79. The Metascore is 75%. The critics praised the good graphics and the classic shooter gameplay, but criticized the very short game time, the weak AI and the unfair level of difficulty. In addition, only three weapons are represented in the game.

Episode 2 (development stopped)

No details are known about this episode other than that it was originally scheduled to be released in Q4 2006. A teaser at the end of the first episode indicates that the player has to fight his way through the mutant-infested "Freeport City". It is uncertain whether this episode will ever appear.
