history

The prison was built from 1874 to 1880 according to plans by the architect Theodor Anckarsvärd . However, as early as 1724 there were buildings used as a prison on Långholmen. The oldest structure goes back to the 1660s.

On November 23, 1910, Alfred Ander was the last person to be executed in Sweden. The executioner was Albert Gustaf Dahlman . A plaque on the site commemorates the execution .

In the 20th century the prison housed up to 620 prisoners. It was the largest prison in Sweden.

In 1972 its use as a prison was discontinued. The newer prison buildings were demolished in 1982. Major renovations followed. In 1989 the current hotel was put into operation.
