The witnesses ( Greek ζευγῖται from zeugosyoke ” or zygon “member of the phalanx ”) were the third of the four census classes according to the constitution of the Athenian statesman Solon of 594 BC. Chr. These were to farmers with only one team and 200 bushels minimum yield. During the war the witnesses served as hoplites .
