Wang Zhenyi (medical doctor)

Wang Zhenyi (also: Zhen-yi Wang; Chinese  王振義  /  王振义 , Pinyin Wáng Zhèn yì ; born November 30, 1924 in Xinghua ) is a Chinese doctor ( hematology ).

Wang Zhenyi studied medicine at the Aurora University in Shanghai with his doctorate in 1948. He then completed his specialist training at the Ruijin Hospital in Shanghai and was employed there. 1960 to 1982 he was a professor at the 2nd Medical University in Shanghai, which later belonged to Shanghai Jiao Tong University. From 1982 to 1984 he was director of basic medical research and from 1984 to 1988 director of the Second Medical University in Shanghai. From 1987 to 1996 he was director of the Shanghai Institute of Hematology.

In the 1950s, he introduced methods of treating hemophilia in China and researched other blood diseases. He also was in the 1950s that the pollen of cattail positive effects in atherosclerosis had and worked with the insulation of the responsible chemical constituents in the 1980s.

He developed a chemotherapy for acute promyelocytic leukemia (APML) with tretinoin (ATRA), which earned him several awards for cancer research.

In 1992 he became a foreign member of the Academie des Sciences and in 1993 a member of the Legion of Honor . In 1994 he received the Kettering Prize with Laurent Degos (with whom he worked on the development of chemotherapy against APML), in 1997 the Charles Rodolphe Brupbacher Prize for Cancer Research together with Laurent Degos, in 1998 the Prix ​​mondial Cino Del Duca and in 2012 the Szent-Györgyi Prize . In 2001 he received an honorary doctorate from Columbia University . He is a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
