Zhōu Dōngyǔ ( 周 冬雨 ; born January 31, 1992 in Shijiazhuang , Hebei , China ) is a Chinese actress . She is one of the most important and formative actresses of Chinese cinema of the 2010s.

Life

Zhou comes from a working class family. In 2010 she made her film debut in The Tree of Heroes by Zhang Yimou , with no previous acting experience. At the time she auditioned for the role, she was still a high school student, and prevailed against nearly 10,000 female competitors for the role. She was discovered by Zhang's talent scouts while she was taking the Nanjing Art Institute entry test. She is said to have been selected for the role because her eyes are as clear as a mountain spring. Her teachers described Zhou as calm, reserved, and well-mannered.

She received numerous awards for her performance in The Tree of Heroes , including the award for "Best Actress" at the Valladolid International Film Festival , the Huabiao Award for "Best New Actress" and the Shanghai Film Critics Award for "Best New Performer". After her early and unexpected breakthrough, she focused on acting and gave up the university entrance exam. Nevertheless, she joined the Beijing Film Academy in 2011 .

In 2011, she landed the lead roles in the film Love Allure Tears of Barbara Wong and continued to play Mao Zedong's wife Yang Kaihui in The Road of Exploring .

Through her performance in the film Soul Mate by Derek Tseng , Zhou rose to become one of the top stars in China. The film is based on a novel by Anni Baobei . Together with Sandra Ma, Zhou received the prestigious Golden Horse Award for best leading actress . At the Macau International Movie Festival, she received the award for best leading actress for the Korean-Chinese production Never Say Goodbye .

In 2019, Zhou also starred in Derek Tseng's next film, Better Days , alongside pop star Jackson Yee . The film deals with the subject of school bullying . The film received positive reviews from critics and Zhou received several awards for her performance.
