Zhou Qifeng

Zhou Qifeng (* 1947 in Hunan Province , Republic of China ) is a Chinese chemist and President of the International Union for Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) .

Career

Zhou studied at Beijing University from 1965 to 1970 . After graduating, he worked there as an assistant. In 1980 he went to the USA and studied at the University of Massachusetts , where he graduated with a PhD in 1983 . He then went back to China and worked there again at the University of Beijing, where he was professor of polymer chemistry from 1990 . In 1999 he became a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and has received numerous prizes and awards, including the 1997 Chinese Science Award. In 2001, Zhou became director of secondary education in the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China. From 2004 to 2008 he was President of Jilin University , from 2008 to 2013 he was President of Beijing University.

In 2010 he was elected to the IUPAC Presidium for the first time and was confirmed in this position in 2014. In 2017 he became President of IUPAC and has held this role to this day.

Zhou is the author of numerous scientific books and publications, particularly in the field of polymer chemistry. The chemist worked intensively on researching liquid crystal polymers .
