Architecture and history

The company was founded in 1830. From 1888 to 1890 the factory building, which is still preserved today, was built as an extension for chocolate production. It was created in two construction phases by the architect Max Behrendt . A first section was created in 1888, the rear annex then in 1890. In 1881, Behrendt had also built the factory owner's villa , which has also been preserved . The extension was built on an L-shaped floor plan, three and a half storeys high made of red bricks. The window openings are designed as segment or round arches. There are arched windows in the basement and on the jamb floor , and arched windows on the second floor, some of which are coupled in pairs. The facades are structured with colored and three-dimensionally highlighted brick bands. There are ornate cornices , lintels and parapets. The building is covered by hip roofs. The actual chocolate production was located in the core building. The side extension was used as a pull-out building, with the machine and distillery wing in the rear.

The building is an important testimony to the industrial history of food production in Magdeburg.

The factory was later used by Walter Engel's Dom-Chocolade-Fabrik Gebr. Steffens & Co. founded in 1914 .

The factory site extended from Halberstädter Strasse about 250 meters to the southeast to Salzmannstrasse. Later the Guts-Muths-Weg was built on the rear part of the area. During the GDR era, the building housed the purchasing and delivery cooperative (ELG) of the Satap saddlery, upholstery and upholstery trade. The building is currently the headquarters of the clothing rental company Kilenda .

In the local register of monuments , the factory is listed as a monument under registration number 094 82690 .
