Ornamental strawberry

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The ornamental strawberry is an addition bastard from the garden strawberry ( Fragaria × ananassa = Fragaria chiloensis x Fragaria virginiana ) and the swamp blood-eye ( Potentilla palustris ). So there are species from two genera involved in the crossing : eight of their ten sets of chromosomes come from the already polyploid strawberry and two from the swamp blood-eye. The ornamental strawberry is very similar to the strawberry and bears edible fruits , but has pink flowers . Since more emphasis was placed on decorative flowers than on the fruit yield in its breeding , it is to be regarded as an ornamental plant .
