Apple Watch 4 with California digital dial

In the wristwatch industry, a California Dial (German dial California ) describes a dial in the style of Art Deco , which consists of half Arabic and the other half Roman numerals. Usually the numbers 4 to 8 are represented in Arabic and 10 to 2 in Roman. The numbers 3, 6 and 9 are sometimes also shown with a horizontal line and the 12 with a triangle. The watch manufacturers Rolex and Panerai in particular are associated with watches in this style. The design was patented by Rolex in 1942, but without any explicit mention of the name California Dial . The name goes back to a Californian restorer who became famous for this design in the 1970s and 1980s. However, there are also alternative theories about the origins of names.

Modern interpretations of the design can be found, for example, in the Nomos Glashütte Club Campus model or in digital form on the Apple Watch (introduced with the watchOS 6 operating system ).
