various make-up removers

Make-up removers are - mostly oil-based - skin cleansers. These are often non-polar, as non-polar substances such as make-up can be removed better with them than with water. Oils and fats in various forms are mostly used in cosmetics. A distinction is made depending on the composition:

  • Oil-in-water emulsions (O / W emulsions),
  • Water-in-oil emulsions "(W / O emulsions) and
  • Mixed emulsions.

application

When using oil-based skin cleansing agents, the agent is applied to the affected area of the skin and then spread over the face and neck with wet hands. The agent should not be massaged in so that the dissolved substance cannot get back into the skin. The mixture should be wiped off immediately with a paper towel or cotton ball to prevent it from being absorbed. Some creams or milk-like products should also be rinsed off with lukewarm water.

Oil-based skin cleansers should be used for dry or sensitive skin, as water mixed with tensides degreases the skin and attacks the protective acid mantle of the skin.

Classification according to ingredients

Make-up removers or oil-based skin cleansers mostly consist of paraffin hydrocarbons . In addition, some contain mild surfactants and polyethylene glycol as solvents. Emulsifiers or fats with branched chains are often added as the other ingredients do not penetrate the skin and a water-impermeable layer can form on the surface of the skin, which can lead to pore blockages.

The oil-based skin repair agents can be further subdivided through further ingredients.

Skin cleansing oils and anhydrous fat creams

The simplest and skin-friendly variant of the skin cleansing oil would be olive oil . However, the cleaning oils on the market are mostly mixtures of oils and waxes. The water-free fat creams are composed in such a way that they become thinner when applied and are therefore easier to apply. The water permeability and skin friendliness is achieved by emulsifiers or fats. These creams or oils can also contain isopropyl palmitate , oleyl alcohol , butyl glycol ether , butyl stearate and polyethylene glycol.

Cleansing creams

The composition of cleansing creams is similar to that of anhydrous fat creams. The difference is that the cleansing creams contain more water and allow you to better remove water-soluble impurities from the skin. For this reason, cleansing creams are often referred to as skin cleansing emulsions of the W / O type. There is also a larger proportion of skin-friendly water-binding and emulsifying substances such as B. wool wax , wool wax alcohols and cetyl alcohol . Such cleansing creams can often be found in cleaning cloths or cleaning pads.

Cold cream type

The skin cleansing agents of the cold cream type cannot be called either a pure W / O or a pure O / W emulsion, since they have a special emulsifier system . This emulsifier system is usually a beeswax-borax emulsifier. Due to this emulsifier system, the cold cream type has a very smooth consistency, a snow-white color and is easy to spread. A more precise composition is not given in this article, as the cold creams are also known as all-purpose creams. This means that cold creams have different uses and depending on the intended use, this cream has a different recipe. The only thing they have in common is the special emulsifier system.

Cleansing milk

The cleansing milk is an oil-in-water emulsion. The cleansing milk is often confused with the water-based body lotion (skin milk), which is intended for skin care. In comparison, however, the cleansing milk contains mineral oils for better cleaning. The emulsifiers in cleansing milk are mostly amino acids. Glycerine , slimy substances , wool wax and cetyl alcohol also occur in small quantities.

Face wash creams

The face wash cream is an oil-in-water emulsion, which also contains mineral oils and large proportions of nonionic and anionic emulsifiers. This cream is washed off after cleaning.

Forms of trade

Make-up removers are available in many different forms:

  • Cleaning foam,
  • Cleansing milk,
  • Washing cream,
  • Cleaning oils (for removing paste residues, make-up and in baby care) and
  • ready-to-use pads or wipes that are soaked with such products.
