Zigmas Zinkevičius (born January 4, 1925 in Juodausiai , Ukmergė district ; † February 20, 2018 in Vilnius ) was a Lithuanian Balticist and dialectologist .

Life

From 1939 to 1945 Zigmas Zinkevičius studied at the Ukmergė grammar school and from 1945 to 1950 at the Faculty of History and Philology of the Vilniaus universitetas (VU) in Vilnius. From 1946 he worked at the chair for Lithuanian language , from 1950 taught at the VU, from 1951 to 1956 at the Vilniaus pedagoginis institutas . From 1995 to 1996 he was director of the Lietuvių kalbos institutas and from 1996 to 1998 Lithuania's minister of education in the Vagnorius II cabinet .

His sister is Ona Zinkevičiūtė-Kondratienė (* 1931), a qualified geologist.
