The vermilion owl ( Ninox ios ) is a species of owl from the genus of the bush owl . It lives endemically on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi .

features

A single specimen was 22 centimeters long and weighed 78 grams. The plumage is largely monochrome red-brown, only the shoulder feathers have a few triangular whitish spots. The eyes are yellow, the beak is ivory in color. The legs are short and thin, the toes whitish yellow with weak horn-colored claws

Way of life

Little is known about the species that live in the mountain forest. The holotype was collected in 1985 by Frank Rozendaal at an altitude of 1120 meters, after which there were few visual observations. The voice consists of dry, chuckling double sounds that are called in series with rising and falling pitch.

distribution

The species is restricted to a small area in the north of Sulawesi, which is designated as the Bogani Nani Wartabone National Park .
