The Buschkäuze ( Ninox ) are a kind from the family of authentics owl (Strigidae). They are small or larger owls with a rounded head, and there are no feather ears. The tail and pointed wings are relatively long. The face veil is indistinct. The nostrils are at the front of the bulging nasal wax skin. The distribution extends from Eastern Siberia, South Asia, Southeast Asia to Japan, over the Philippines, New Guinea and Australia to New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, to the Sunda Islands and to other islands in the Indo-Pacific region. One species is endemic to Madagascar .
Systematics
There are currently 28 different types. Some subspecies could be species, but further morphological and genetic analysis is necessary. The Madagascar owl is provisionally in the genus Ninox . The HBW system (including BirdLife International and the IUCN ) sees more of a relationship to the little owl and places it in the genus Athene .

- Boobook Owl ( Ninox boobook ). Distribution: Australia, Roti , Timor , southern New Guinea.
- Togian falcon owl ( Ninox burhani ). Distribution: Togian
- Kläfferkauz ( Ninox connivens ). Distribution: Northern Moluccas, New Guinea, Australia
- Guadalcanal Owl ( Ninox granti ), often regarded as a subspecies of the Solomon Owl . Distribution: Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands
- Vermilion Owl ( Ninox ios ). Distribution: North Sulawesi
- Solomon owl ( Ninox jacquinoti ). Distribution: Solomon Islands
- Tasmanian Cuckoo Owl ( Ninox leucopsis ). Distribution: Tasmania
- Camiguin owl ( Ninox leventisi) . Distribution: Mindanao .
- Red cuckoo owl ( Ninox lurida ). Distribution: Queensland
- Malaita owl ( Ninox malaitae ), often viewed as a subspecies of the Solomon owl . Distribution: Malaita, Solomon Islands
- Manus Owl ( Ninox meeki ). Distribution: Manus
- Mindoro Owl ( Ninox mindorensis ). Distribution: Mindoro
- Christmas Island Bush Owl ( Ninox natalis ). Distribution: Christmas Island

New Zealand cuckoo owl ( Ninox novaeseelandeae ). Distribution: New Zealand.
- Lord Howe Cuckoo Owl ( Ninox novaeseelandiae albaria ). Distribution: Lord Howe Island , extinct
- Norfolk Island Cuckoo Owl ( Ninox novaeseelandeae undulata ). Distribution: Norfolk Island , extinct in purebred form, survived as Norfolk Island / New Zealand cuckoo owl hybrid.
- New Caledonia Cuckoo Owl ( Ninox cf novaezelandeae ). Distribution: New Caledonia . This form is only known from subfossil bone material.
- Dark Owl ( Ninox obscura ). Distribution: Andaman and Nicobar Islands
- Owl owl ( Ninox ochracea ). Distribution: Sulawesi
- New Britain Owl ( Ninox odiosa ). Distribution: New Britain
- Philippine Owl ( Ninox philippensis ). Distribution: Philippines, with the exception of Mindoro
- Little Owl ( Ninox punctulata ). Distribution: Sulawesi, Butung Islands .
- Makira Owl ( Ninox roseoaxillaris ), often regarded as a subspecies of the Solomon Owl . Distribution: Makira, Solomon Islands
- Sumbakauz ( Ninox rudolfi ). Distribution: Sumba
- Red owl ( Ninox rufa ). Distribution: Northern Australia and New Guinea.
- Cebu owl ( Ninox rumseyi) . Distribution: Cebu .
- Falcon Owl ( Ninox scutulata ). Distribution: India , Sri Lanka , East Siberia , Japan , Andaman Islands, Malaysia , Myanmar , Laos , Vietnam , People's Republic of China , Korea , Great Sunda Islands , Lesser Sunda Islands , Sulawesi, Moluccas, Taiwan and the Philippines .
- Moluccan Owl ( Ninox squamipila ). Distribution: Moluccas and Tanimbar Islands
- Giant Owl ( Ninox strictua ). Distribution: Southeast Australia
- Little Sumba Owl ( Ninox sumbaensis ). Distribution: Sumba
- Madagascar owl ( Ninox superciliaris ). Distribution: Madagascar
- Monochrome owl ( Ninox theomacha ). Distribution: New Guinea, D'Entrecasteaux Islands , Louisiade Archipelago .
