The Buschkäuze ( Ninox ) are a kind from the family of authentics owl (Strigidae). They are small or larger owls with a rounded head, and there are no feather ears. The tail and pointed wings are relatively long. The face veil is indistinct. The nostrils are at the front of the bulging nasal wax skin. The distribution extends from Eastern Siberia, South Asia, Southeast Asia to Japan, over the Philippines, New Guinea and Australia to New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, to the Sunda Islands and to other islands in the Indo-Pacific region. One species is endemic to Madagascar .

Systematics

There are currently 28 different types. Some subspecies could be species, but further morphological and genetic analysis is necessary. The Madagascar owl is provisionally in the genus Ninox . The HBW system (including BirdLife International and the IUCN ) sees more of a relationship to the little owl and places it in the genus Athene .
