The New Britain owl ( Ninox odiosa ) is a species of owl from the genus of the bush owl . It is endemic to New Britain .

features

The length is 20 to 23 centimeters, a single female weighed 209 grams. The top, the head and a broad chest band are dark brown to chocolate brown with numerous whitish spots. The wing feathers and the tail have white bands. The lower breast and belly are piebald white and light brown. The brown face with white eyebrows is bordered at the bottom by a white throat patch. The eyes are bright yellow to orange, the beak is light greenish with a yellowish tip. The legs are feathered, the toes yellowish brown, the claws dark horn-colored with blackish tips.

Way of life

It lives in forests in the lowlands and on hills up to 800 meters, but is also found in cultivated land and even in cities. The food is made up of insects and small vertebrates, including bats. The voice consists of a continuous chant for up to three minutes, huu-huu-huu-huu ... , which starts low, but then becomes higher, faster and louder.
