Zion's Hill (originally called Hell's Gate ) is the name of a small village on the island of Saba , one of the special communities of the Netherlands in the Caribbean . With almost 300 inhabitants, Zion's Hill is the third largest town on Saba after the island's capital The Bottom and Windwardside . About every third resident of the place was not born on the island.

The place was renamed after residents and church representatives repeatedly complained to Gezaghebber (the island's head of government) about the negative name “Hell's Gate”. The residents of Zion's Hill refer to themselves in English as "Sabanians" in contrast to the "Sabans" that are common in the other settlements.

geography

Located about two miles northeast of The Bottom on the north side of the island, Zion's Hill is the first place visitors arrive when arriving from the island's airport, Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport . The place can only be reached via the only road on the island (aptly called "The Road"). The stretch of road from Zion's Hill to the airport was the last part of the route to be completed in 1958.

Attractions

Holy Rosary Church

The Holy Rosary Church is in the village . This little church, built in 1962, was constructed to resemble a building from the Middle Ages. In the immediate vicinity of the church is the Saba Lace Boutique , where the famous Saba lace (locally called Saba Lace or Spanish Work ) is made and sold. The place is also known for an extremely strong rum that is produced here. Tours to the Saba National Marine Park and the island's now disused sulfur mine also start in Zion's Hill .
