Zipcar is an international car sharing provider. The company is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Avis Budget Group . In 2019 the company was active with over 12,000 vehicles.

history

The company was founded in January 2000 by Antje Danielson and Robin Chase.

In 2007 Zipcar merged with competitor Flexcar . The original brand identity was retained.

On March 14, 2013, Avis Budget Group bought Zipcar for $ 500 million. The company became part of a complex car rental network and a subsidiary of the Avis Budget Group, alongside classic car rental companies such as Avis and Budget . The previous company president Scott Griffith, who had led the company for 10 years, handed over his chairmanship to Mark Norman.

In September 2016, Zipcar announced that one million members in over 500 cities and 9 countries are using the car sharing service. They also offer 10,000 cars in the United States , Austria , Belgium , Canada , France , Germany , Spain , Turkey and the United Kingdom , which would make Zipcar the largest car sharing provider in the world.

On July 4, 2017 it was announced that the company would discontinue its offer in Austria from August 6, 2017.
