Cistercian Abbey of All Saints

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cistercian Abbey of All Saints was a women's monastery in Oberwesel from 1230 to 1802 .

history

In 1230 nuns in Oberwesel, where the Cistercian Abbey of Wörschweiler had owned a courtyard with a chapel since 1209, founded a Cistercian women's monastery (Immediatoberer: Wörschweiler), which moved to the remote Niederbachtal in 1236. With the support of the Bishop of Trier , the Lords of Schönburg (Rhine) and citizens of Oberwesel, a convent and monastery were built (inauguration in 1322). From 1340, the nuns maintained a hospital for the poor. After it was destroyed by fire in 1460, the abbey was rebuilt and existed until the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss of 1802, with which all monasteries were dissolved. A fire destroyed the church in the same year, another in 1825 the rest of the monastery.
