Cistercian Abbey of Bonlieu (Sarthe)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cistercian Abbey Bonlieu (Sarthe) was 1219-1790 a monastery of Cistercian nuns in Dissay-sous-Courcillon , Sarthe , France.

history

In 1219, Guillaume des Roches founded the Cistercian Abbey Bonlieu (Latin: Bonus Locus "Good Place") on the Loir River in Bannes (today: Dissay-sous-Courcillon, not far from Château-du-Loir ), in which he was buried. In 1790, the French Revolution closed the monastery and dismantled most of the buildings. Between Dissay and Château-du-Loir, the field name La Croix de Bonlieu , the street name Bonlieu and the name of the Hippodrome de Bonlieu racecourse are reminiscent of the former monastery.
