Cistercian Abbey of Marenx

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cistercian Abbey Marenx (also: Maren or Mareux ) was 1159-1442 a monastery of Cistercian nuns in Carla-Bayle , a municipality in the department of Ariege in France .

history

In the early days of the Cistercian Order, when male monasteries were founded in the 12th century, women’s monasteries were often founded next door for female family members who also felt called to be. This explains the founding of a nunnery by Boulbonne Abbey in 1159, 20 kilometers away . The Bishop of Toulouse, Raymond de Lautrec (1140–1163), allowed the takeover of the existing Saint-Géniès church to establish the Notre-Dame de Marenx monastery (Latin: Marenxum , later: Marens , erroneously also Mareux ), north of today's Carla-Bayle municipality (in the Mestropey district). The Cistercian Abbey of Calers was even closer than Boulbonne , but it belonged to a different filiation and was less wealthy. Marens Monastery existed until 1442. Then it was dissolved and its goods in Boulbonne were incorporated. The church was destroyed in 1635. Today only hamlet ( Marens ) and farm names ( St. Géniès, St. Genes ) remind of the monastery and its church.
