The Cistercian Abbey Ołobok was 1211-1864 a monastery of Cistercian nuns in Ołobok at Sieroszewice in today Powiat Ostrowski (Greater Poland) in Ostrow Wielkopolski and Kalisz .
history
In 1211, Duke Władysław Odonic von Kalisz founded the Cistercian monastery of Ołobok ("Altbach" or "Ollebach") on a tributary of the Prosna , which was dedicated to John the Evangelist and the Blessed Virgin Mary. It was settled by nuns from Trebnitz Monastery . In 1241, the just donated Łubnice priory on the Prosna, today in the powiat Wieruszowski in the Łódź voivodeship , was founded from Ołobok , but was withdrawn in 1253. However, the monastery kept the property there, in which the astronomer Maria Cunitz later lived and worked for a while. In 1836 the Prussian government officially dissolved the Ołobok Monastery, but the convent only ended in 1864 with the death of the last remaining nun. The St. John Evangelist Church is still standing.
