history

Father Emil Naszályi (* December 15, 1910 - † November 7, 2002), Cistercian monk of the Zirc monastery , was appointed by Abbot Vendel Endrédy on August 20, 1944 as sole responsible for the establishment of a Cistercian community. The postulants, who were accepted on September 8, 1944, were constituted as a convent by József Mindszenty , Bishop of Veszprém and later cardinal, on September 29, 1945 in Nagyesztergár (not far from Zirc ). The dressing up took place on December 16, 1945. The 19-year-old Gemma (Gabriella) Punk (born March 31, 1927) was elected prioress in 1946.

When the community was dissolved by the communist state in 1950, it went underground and lived in Érd and Budapest in a scattered form. In 1965 she achieved legal admission to the Cistercian order and direct subordination to the superiors general. On December 15, 1971, Prioress Gemma was ordained abbess in Pannonhalma Monastery . As a result, the community was tolerated by the state. In 1989 the monastery was officially elevated to an abbey. A church and monastery buildings were built in Érd (inauguration on September 11, 1993). In 2016, Abbess Gemma Punk (honorary citizen of the city of Érd since 2008) celebrated her 70th anniversary as a superior at the age of 89.
