Cistercian Abbey of Tavira

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cistercian Abbey Tavira (also: Convento das Bernardas ) was from 1530 to 1862, a monastery of Cistercian nuns in Tavira , Algarve , in Portugal .

history

In gratitude for the luck of the war in Asilah , King Manuel I founded a nunnery in Tavira in 1509, which later passed into the hands of the Bishop of Faro , Fernando II. Coutinho (1501–1538), and which became Cistercian in 1530 at his instigation. It was called Nossa Senhora da Piedade ("Our Lady of Mercy") or simply Convento das Bernardas (" St. Bernard Monastery ", also: Convento de São Bernardo , "Monastery of St. Bernard"). Like all Portuguese monasteries after the Liberals' victory in the War of Miguelists , Tavira Abbey was closed to newcomers in 1834. The last nun died in 1862. Recently, the buildings, which had run down over time, were converted into a residential building and a holiday residence by the architect Eduardo Souto de Moura while preserving the Cistercian style elements, which continue to bear the name Convento das Bernardas .
