from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cistercian Abbey Vrouwenpark was 1215-1796 a monastery of Cistercian nuns in Wezemaal, Rotselaar , province of Flemish Brabant , in Belgium .

history

Amold III. von Rotselaar, hereditary seneschal of Duke Heinrich I , founded the Vrouwenpark monastery ( Parcum Dominarum ) ten kilometers north of Leuven shortly before 1215, which was populated by daughters from the nobility and patriciate of Leuven. Blessed Catherina (Rachel) van Park (also: van Leuven , van Löwen or van Vrouwenpark ) died in 1220 as a Cistercian woman in the Vrouwenpark monastery. There is evidence of a brewery in the 15th century. In the 16th century the nuns had to flee to Leuven several times. The monastery flourished briefly under the Spanish abbess Robertina d'Amenzaga (1655–1664). In 1796 the monastery was closed and dismantled during the French Revolution . There has been a Montfortaner school on site since 1928 .
