The Cistercian Abbey Zwijveke (French: Zwyveke ) was a 1223 to 1797 existing monastery of Cistercian nuns in Dendermonde , East Flanders province in Belgium .

history

The nunnery, founded in Dendermonde in 1223, first built a monastery outside the city walls on the river Dender (Zwijveke I). After various kinds of destruction, looting and pillage in the 16th and 17th centuries, the monastery moved to the city and built new buildings from 1671 (Zwijveke II). In 1797 it was dissolved in the course of the French Revolution .

Zwijveke I is reminiscent of the “Zwijvekekouter” district, in which a building remains that is now a residential building. The gatehouse, the guest wing and the cloister, which today houses the "Zwijvekemuseum", are left of Zwijveke II. The still existing church of Sint-Gillis-Binnen served Zwijveke II as a monastery church.
